Presenting
Devi’s DegusCurrently, there are 18 degus living under our roof. They are split into three groups consisting of eight, four and two degus, respectively, as well as four new emergencies that still need to be co-housed.
They each have their own cage, but they take turns on their shared run area which is basically an entire room that has been made degu-safe.
Following, you’ll get to know each of them as well as where they live.

Slip
Nickname(s): Slippy, Ninja
Birthday: 14.April.2018

A very talented escape artist Watchful, agile, intelligent, loves taking risks, easily scared
Funnily enough, this guy was named “Slip” before we knew how fitting it would be: since early childhood, he slips through the most awkward places, sometimes even gets stuck in a crazy attempt to escape through the tiniest crack available to him. We learned a lot from him regarding securing the cage as well as capturing escaped goos.
Once, he had escaped and we were searching for him in vain until a toilet paper roll started squeaking all of a sudden. We had kept those rolls in the living room for future DIY-projects. And looky there, he was stuck inside one of them! (Pictres) Be cautious that if you choose to give your goos toilet paper rolls to play with since it can be dangerous for our furry friends! Always cut them, so they couldn’t get stuck. It goes without saying that you should check your degus every day to recognise such incidents early.
the brave
Knot
Nickname(s): Knotty
Birthday: 14.April.2018
Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: 180g
Colour: Agouti
Siblings: Slip
Tame: a little
Special features: slightly lighter colour of fur than our other agoutis, bigger ears
Living in: group of eight, monster cage
Brave, curious, strong, but not taking risks, calm, adorable, considered
You wouldn’t see it at first glance, but he is Slip’s twin brother. Their personalities are completely different though and for the longest time, we thought, he would fight for the alpha position. Instead, he is just a brave, strong, but friendly goo among his group mates.
Spotty
Raschmuschen Rho
Nickname(s): Raschmu, Raschmuschen
Birthday: 01.Mai.2018
Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: 175g
Colour: Agouti Schecke
Siblings: Chili Pi
Tame: once caught, he is well-behaved
Special features: his cute white spots!
Living in: group of eight, monster cage
shy, scared, hesitant, friendly, cuddly
He and his twin brother Chili Pi were the shiest degus we had ever encountered. Even two years in, the are still very sceptical of any changes, but do enjoy some play time with humans – especially if food is involved.
Goldie
Chili Pi
Nickname(s): Goldie
Birthday: 01.Mai.2018
Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: 228g
Colour: Sand with spots
Siblings: Chili Pi
Tame: very difficult to catch, but doesn’t bite
Special features: his few, but cute white spots
Living in: group of eight, monster cage
shy, hesitant, hectic, distrusting
One of the few goos you cannot lure with food. “Safety first” seems to be his mantra and so returning this little one to the cage sometimes proves to be quite a tedious task.
Nesthäkchen
Dax
Nickname(s): Daxie, Baby-face
Birthday: 16.Jun.2018
Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: 239g
Colour: Agouti
Siblings: Seven of Nine
Tame: very difficult to catch, but doesn’t bite, return to the cage by himself
Special features: a little darker in colour than our other agoutis, rounder, narrower face (“baby face”), removes the hair from his paw
Living in: group of eight, monster cage
shy, hesitant, calm, distrusting, needs cuddles, had a difficult childhood and takes a long time to build trust, has psychological issues (removing hair on his paws) that are not related to space issues, as would be common for that behaviour.
You’d never think he is 7of9’s twin brother because he might as well be his opposite: shy, introverted, easily scared, loves sharing and cuddling with fellow goos. No matter how old he’ll get and whter there are younger goos around, he’ll always be my baby.
Der Rabauke
Seven of Nine
Nickname(s): Seven, Scheven, Sevsev
Birthday: 16.Jun.2018
Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: 245g
Colour: Sand
Siblings: Dax
Tame: yes
Special features: our only goo in that colour, enormous eyes
Living in: group of eight, monster cage
extroverted, doesn’t like to share at all, always wants to be first, hectic, a glutton, aggressive against his fellow goos, especially if it is about food or playing space (= us humans), active
Ultra-cute to us humans, this is the most aggressive goo we have. He doesn’t like sharing, neither food nor space and will often find himself in small fights with the others because of this. Looking into his dreamy eyes, we cannot stay mad at him for long, though. We might have been assimilated.

Sibligngs: –
Tame: a little
Special features: charakteristic right eye
Living in: group of two seniors, monster cage
very mature, strong, balanced, calm, but can fight back if necessary, a good step dad until they outgrew him
He was the loving step dad of Kimi, Foo and Fighter when we initially got him from the pet shelter in Vienna. When the bunch grew over his head, we had to separate them and re-socialise him with Diegoo, a fellow senior with whom he has a very harmoneous relationship.

Living in: group of four, Big One Panorama wooden cage
curious, friendly, active, doesn’t bite, but gently gnaws on everyone and everything
This tomboy got his ear severed when he was fighting for the alpha position with his brothers. He won and wears his new style with pride, this little pirate. Meanwhile, he is not alpha anymore thanks to Franky’s arrival, but he doesn’t seem to mind at all.

Nickname(s): –
Birthday: 12.Feb.2018 (?)
Gender: ♂ Male

Colour: Agouti
Siblings: Kimi, Foo
Tame: yes
Special features: we recognise him by process of elimination
Living in: group of four, Big One Panorama wooden cage
active, didn’t like to share but Franky changed him, curious
This little fellow was quite aggressive and it was clear that he was after the alpha position in the group. Puberty made them go against their stepdad, thereby changing the group dynamics several times, but the fight for alpha was eventually won by hisbrothe Kimi.

Gender: ♂ Male
Weight: ?
Colour: Blue
Siblings: –
Tame: yes
Special features: tail half torn off, half necrotic
Living in: currently alone, will be introduced to Franky & Co in near future
curious, friendly, active
He was found with a group of 9 other degus of mixed gender, abandoned in the cold in a park. He was severely injured, had an open back, his tail was half torn off, half necrotic and overall he seemed extremely severed by ranking fights.
We fed him up, cared for his wounds and will continue to do so until he is fit enough to be introduced to Franky & Co. We think his character is a perfect fit for that group and hope they’ll see it the same way.

Devi’s
Cages

The Monster Cage
This bespoke cage has been tailored to our needs. All surfaces and edges are sealed with animal friendly epoxy layers and silicone. It has space for two UV lamps as well as integrated LED lighting for all other compartments.
It’s dimensions are 300 x 75 x 240 cm, consisting of six 150 x 75 x 80 cm modules.

Big One Panorama
This was our first big, wooden cage and there was a lot we learned from using it. We had to secure all edges with aluminium busses and corners as well as double up on the used mesh. The degus actually manages to gnaw through the integrated door which we had to replace completely.
It’s dimensions are 200 x 90 x 60 cm in the lowest level, 200 x 75 x 60 cm in the middle level and 200 x 50 x 60 cm on the top.

DIY-Käfig
by Devilita
Consisting of a 150 x 60 x 75 cm glass aquarium which is used as digging level and a self-made top floor of 150 x 60 x 50 cm with a bespoke, cave-like backdrop, this cage can only house a maximum of three degus.

Temporäre Konstruktion
by Songmics
We’ve been searching for a method to quickly and easily build and remove a cage for introductions and finally found this grid solution. It is finely woven and stable enough for the degus not to escape and it is flexible to our needs. Usually, we build two identical halves separated by more grids, so the degus can smell and see, but not harm each other.
